Mexico's telecom industry grows 14 pct

Mexico City, Nov 27, 2012 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Mexico's telecommunications industry grew 14 percent in the first nine months of 2012, compared to the same period last year, the Federal Telecommunications Commission, or Cofetel, said.

The industry's growth rate was well above that of the economy, which expanded at a 4.2 percent clip in the January-September period, compared to the same period last year, the Cofetel said in a statement.

During the July-September 2012 period, the sector posted its best growth rate since the fourth quarter of 2008, expanding at a 15.1 percent clip, compared to the same months in 2011, the Cofetel said.

Satellite television was the best performer in the third quarter, growing at a 22.9 percent year-on-year rate.

Pay television in general reached 12.6 million subscribers, with satellite service leading the way.

International long-distance service grew 20.8 percent and mobile telephony expanded at a 20.3 percent rate, the Cofetel said.

The number of mobile broadband users grew 56.4 percent in the third quarter of 2012 to more than 10 million, while mobile telephony minutes rose 20.3 percent, the Federal Telecommunications Commission said. EFE msc/hv
