Vivo becomes Brazil's first operator to offer 4G international roaming [Global Data Point]

(Global Data Point Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Telefí³nica's Vivo (NYSE: VIV) has become the first Brazilian mobile carrier to allow international roaming with 4G technology, the company said in a statement.

The service became available this Wednesday (Oct 2), initially for São Paulo city customers travelling to the US. The service is due to be opened up to all Vivo's clients nationwide on October 4.

Moreover, according to Vivo, at least 10 new countries should be added to the list by the end of the year. Conversely, citizens from these countries will equally be able to use 3G and 4G roaming while visiting Brazil, Vivo added.

Although the first company to seal such roaming deals, the announcement has come months after Vivo's original estimates.

During the launch of the carrier's 4G services on April 30, general director Paulo César Teixeira said the company was conducting network tests with carriers abroad and that he expected to seal the first 4G data roaming agreements by the end of May, in time for the Fifa Confederations Cup held last June.

The company now highlights in its statement that the service will benefit customers visiting the country for the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

Vivo is Brazil's mobile telephony and 4G market leader. According to telecoms regulator Anatel's latest monthly report, the company had over 45% of Brazil's 4G connections by the end of August.
