High retail prices have also impacted on the premium sector whose share is down to 19.3%; low priced cigarettes now account for 76.6% of overall sales. This is reflected in brand shares with the leading four brands - Mayfair, Sterling, Lambert & Butler and Richmond - all being value brands.



Some 8.2 billion pieces are expected to be lost from the duty paid sector by 2022 bringing consumption down to 32.3 billion pieces, equivalent to 487 pieces per head.

Per capita consumption in duty-paid terms is much lower than in neighbouring Argentina at 415 pieces and smoking prevalence is under 18% with just over a fifth of men and 15% of women smoking.
