Mexico : IFETEL gives go ahead to NEXTEL approach for buying Miditel spectrum [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Ifetel) has given green signal to Nextel Mexico s approach to acquire frequencies in the 10GHz band from regional operator Miditel, through its NII Digital affiliate.

The concessions that each encompasses a 60MHz block of spectrum include six regions, namely: 1 (Baja California), 2 (North West), 3 (North), 5 (West), 7 (Gulf & South) and 8 (South East).

The frequencies are supposed to be used to support Nextel s transport network.

The telecom company was co-owned by Korea Telecom (now KT Corp) until 1998 and initially set out its stall as a regional wireless in the local loop (WiLL) provider, after obtaining a 3.4GHz licence in the late-90s.

Moreover, the telco even secured a 1.9GHz PCS concession covering Mexico City, Estado de Mexico and Guadalajara, although it is unclear if this was ever utilised.
