Angola Cables, Foreign Partners Announce Submarine Cable

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Angola Cables and its foreign partners, Algar Telecom (Brazil), Antel (Uruguay) and Google announced on Tuesday in Luanda the construction of a new submarine optical fibre cable.

The information was released Tuesday in Luanda by the executive director of Angola Cables, António Nunes.

Speaking on the fringes of the International fair of telecommunications, information technologies and internet, the official stated that the submarine cable will connect the cities of Santos and Fortaleza (Brazil) and Boca Raton (Flórida, United States of America).

According to the source, the construction of the sub-marine cable will cost about Akz 500 million (Usd 5.0 million), with Angola Cables joining the project with a Usd 100 million share. The project will be ready late in 2016.

He said the intention of the company in joining the project is to become a great or even the major connection hub and supplier of contents from Latin and north America in Africa.

The official explained that the partners will not build a firm to run the cable, but all will operate independently, as each will have its optical fibre within the cable and will share the maintenance costs.

António Nunes said as well that the investment is a joint effort to improve the internet structure and satisfy the current needs of the users and prepare to face future demands.

The line will be 10,556 kilometres long with six pairs of optical fibres. According to estimates, the cable will expand the existing submarine cables broad band by 64 terabits per second.

Angola Cables is an Angolan public-private company that operates submarine cable systems in the southern Atlantic region and Africa.
