Automotive Telematics Reaches Tipping Point in Latin America, Says Telematics Update

According to car sales data gathered by Telematics Update, South American vehicle sales are forecast to reach 4.5 million units by 2014, with Brazil accounting for 60 percent of the total.  The Brazilian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, or ANFAVEA, attributes this growth in Brazil to greater stability, more per capita income, more jobs and more credit than before. Data furnished by ANFAVEA shows that in terms of percentage, car sales are even more impressive in Peru. The market is tiny, with just 116,000 cars sold in 2010, but that was triple the number sold in 2006, says ANFAVEA. Likewise, in Argentina and Colombia, respectively, the new-car sales last year gained 50 percent and 25 percent over unit sales in 2006, according to ANFAVEA.

Because Latin America has one of the highest car theft rates in the world, security is one of the key reasons forcing drivers to use automotive telematics. This focus on security has created a demand for additional value added services such as navigation and infotainment, both in the consumer and commercial market, reports Telematics Update.

In a statement, Precksha Saksena, director, Telematics Update, stated, “While telematics is not new to the Latin American industry, I think we have reached a tipping point, and with imminent legislations, plus the number of organizations competing to grab a share of the market opportunity, I think there will be a lot to look out for. It is critical for telematics providers to understand how automakers, the government, hardware manufacturers, and tier one technology suppliers visualize business models, technology and strategy developments in this field to design products and timelines in-line with current trends,” added Saksena.

To bring together these decision makers, and allow key players in the value chain to gain insights into different strategies and capitalize on the new legislation, Telematics Update has organized a conference called Telematics Brazil & LATAM 2012 Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil, September 12-13, 2012.

Expert speakers from Volvo, Daimler, Ford, Google, BMW, Autotrac, Continental, Gristec, Microsoft (News - Alert) and more will speak at the conference, said Telematics Update. Key topics to be discussed include CONTRAN 245, Managing Seamless Networks Across LATAM, Fitting LATAM into a Global Strategy, Navigating Your Way Across Latin America, and VAS (Value Added Services) Take Center-Stage In Brazil.
