IT Spending to Boom in Brazil
By Peter B. Counter

You are going to be hearing about Brazil a lot for the next little while. The fifth largest country in the world is host to two of the most major international sporting events in the coming years, and this will obviously attract the eye of the world media and a tidal wave of tourism. The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic games are not just events that bring with them a certain cloud of prestige, but they also signal good news for the Latin American nation in the area of IT spending.

Last year marked a slowdown in PC sales for Brazil, but things are expected to change very quickly in that manner. By the end of 2013, domestic IT spending has been forecasted to reach $11.8 billion US dollars and it’s because of more than just sports.

Though much of the renewed growth in the market will be driven by the athletic competitions, which are the force behind the world-class in-building wireless infrastructure that’s expected to bring unprecedented coverage to resident and visiting fans alike, there are a wide number of factors at play.

According to Fast Market Research, an analyst firm, the national commitment to expand broadband service will encourage steady growth of cloud services. Data centers also stand to be improved, not to mention built, with Level 3 and Riot Games announced Monday that they will be teaming up to bring low latency online gaming to the country through a data center that will allow for domestic hosting of the free-to-play League of Legends, relieving gamers from a reliance on a Florida server.

A boost in hardware sales is predicted too. The firm expects the government to purchase a large number of PCs for educational projects, and mobile tech is becoming better and more affordable for residents. More hardware, of course better prepared they are for the impending spread of the omnipresent M2M market, which seems poised to take off in the utilities and e-health verticals.

Fast Market Research warns of a slowdown in 2014, however, but it remains optimistic that the three year period preceding 2017 will have a steady annual growth rate of 8.2 percent. Brazil is the place to be for excitement these coming days, whether your thing is e-sports, athletic sports or IT of all different sorts.
