United States’ telecommunications software maker Telcordia (News - Alert) has been selected to implement number portability system in Chile.
The contract has been awarded by Number Portability Committee, which is represented by Chile's all telecom carriers and the regulator.
Piscataway, New Jersey–based Telcordia has not given any financial details of the deal.
Under the agreement, Telcordia will provide managed services, training and carrier-grade software solutions for Chile's regulators as well as fixed and mobile service providers as part of rolling out number portability system in the country.
According to Telcordia, it has been selected on the merits of its background, technical capabilities and pricing model.
The U.S. firm, which assisted more than 14 countries in implementing number-portability system so far, will begin its work in the later part of this year.
Mexico is another country in Americas where Telcorida implemented number portability system.
Number portability allows consumers to retain their number when they switch over another telecom operator; the system increases competition among service providers, and ultimately drives down telecom cost.
"Our technology and real-world experience play a key role in being able to offer low porting fees and timely delivery of the system," said Richard Jacowleff (News - Alert), President, Interconnection Solutions, Telcordia.
Telcordia says its business model combines fixed and transaction-based fees, and benefits all the constituents in the ecosystem –– operators, government agencies, number portability administrators and consumers.
"This new model strikes a balance between minimizing operator costs, making port transaction fees affordable and helping to ensure the number portability administrator properly invests in the infrastructure and management of services," said Jacowleff,
Countries that used Telcordia's solutions for number portability include United States of erica, Canada, Mexico, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey,Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Greece, UAE and South Africa.
