Technology Business Opportunities in Latin America

Latin America has a lot of business opportunities within the technology and communications industry, specifically in some areas more than others. But is this a game of risk? That is a question that a panel of experts discussed in a Latin Communications Conference and Expo session in Miami this afternoon.

Brazil and Mexico tend to cast very large shadows on Latin America, but there are a lot of indicators showing opportunity outside those two markets in NOLA and SOLA.  In fact, for John Frame of Sigma Systems (News - Alert), Argentina has been extremely successful for his business. “We have provisioned IP video, which has been a very exciting market for us,” he commented.

Alejandro Musgrove, vice president at Adistec, has observed a lot of interesting things happening in Columbia and Ecuador.

“More and more end users are looking to jump into this new wave of cloud computing,” he said.

In general, Latin America has an interesting speed in adopting new trends, as some companies are even skipping collocation and going right the cloud.

“We strive for technology. We love technology,” he added.

In order to be cautious of the risk, however, you need to do your homework first. “You must factor certain information into your business model. Be prepared, but don’t get shy. Every market is a good market,” Musgrove explained.

Douglas Wallace, general manager at OLAM Symantec (News - Alert), has been seeing significant ROI generated in Columbia because the country has highly skilled professionals in a now stable market. Additionally, Wallace identifies Peru and Chile as very stable countries with almost no risk at all.

“I am still betting though, it’s like a poker game – you hope you bet your chips in the right country and you take that chance,” he said. “It is a question of how much do you have to invest and how much ROI do you want.”

Overall, the Latin American market is mature, according to Wallace. Latin America has emerging markets because the country is currently at a distinct level of communication and technology.
