As the life struggles to return to normalcy in Haiti, the companies and other types of commercial establishments too are getting back on their feet. The Digicel (News - Alert) network in Haiti has announced that more than 92 percent of its cell sites now fully operational. Also, the company has significantly increased its international circuits.

Digicel is the largest mobile telecommunications operator in the Caribbean and a recent new entrant to the Central American mobile market. The company currently has around 5,500 people on its rolls.

Following the earthquake on Jan.12, Digicel technicians have been working to restore the network by deploying equipment to replace damaged cell sites. 13 planes carrying 80,000 lbs of equipment, 90,000 lbs of supplies and 21,000 lbs of medical supplies and antibiotics have been sent to Haiti from Jamaica, company officials said, adding that the Digicel office in Turgeau, Port-au-Prince, is operational and the majority of employees are back at work.

“We have made excellent progress over the last two weeks in restoring the Digicel network in Haiti,” said Colm Delves, Digicel Group’s CEO. “With over 92 percent of our cell sites fully operational, the remaining 8 percent – which are destroyed rooftop sites – are being replaced with mobile cell sites, some of which have already been deployed with the remainder scheduled to be commissioned over the next few weeks.”

Assisting the company with the relief effort, T-Mobile has donated four Liberty Jeeps, 35 generators and 2,000 Motorola (News - Alert) W160 phones and chargers. Also, Digicel employees across the region have been taking part in a variety of initiatives to raise money for the Digicel Haiti Relief Fund.

Recently, the company announced acollaboration with international reggae artist, Shaggy to write and produce a song -- Rise Again -- to raise money for the Digicel Haiti Relief Fund. As the single largest investor in Haiti with a total investment of U$300 million since its launch in 2006, Digicel has over two million customers in Haiti.
